No worries. Here’s a very simple solution for you.

First, navigate to the Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sound. Under Sound, click on Manage audio device.

Then, make sure that your USB speakers is set as the default audio device, and click on Properties.

Under the Enhancements tab, tick Disable all enhancements and click Apply.

You’re ready to go! Play a song and try it out!

Your USB speakers should be up and running again! Viola~

If you spot blinking light, means there is an error occur. When the orange light appear,  it’s probably insufficient paper or something related to the ink catridge. When you get the orange light blinking all the way, eventhough paper is load, ink catridge is not empty, it is probably the printer recongized the ink catridge as empty (although it’s not empty!).

Some will suggest using the printer reset software (mostly for Windows user). Before you busy searching for the reset software, try to following.

Press and hold on to the resume button (the button beside the orange light) for about 6 seconds and let go. The printer now should be able to be in the stable normal state. If fail, do try again and hold the resume button for a longer time.

I’ve tested this on a Canon PIXMA iP1880 connected to Ubuntu Linux 7.04, and it worked.

If you want to input Chinese character (or other Asian languages like Japanese or Korean), the first thing you have to ensure is your Windows XP has the additional language installed. First, you will have to go to the Control Panel.

Click on Start > Control Panel.

For the sake of this tutorial, I suggest you to switch your Control Panel to Classic View if you haven’t. To do so, just click on the Switch to Classic View on the upper left of the Control Panel window.

Next, look for the icon and double click on it.  Then, in the Regional and Language Options window, navigate to the Languages tab. Then tick the Install files for East Asian languages. (Note: If you already can see Chinese character, means you already have this feature installed. Therefore you can skip this step.)

You will see a Windows message something like this:

You choose to install the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language files. This will require 230MB or more of available disk space. The files will be installed after you click OK or Apply on the Regional and Language Options dialog box.

To setup the language input, you have to click on the Details button.

To add the input language, follow these 4 steps:

1. Click on the Add button.
2. Select Chinese (PRC) for the Input Language.
3. Select Chinese (Simplified) – Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 for Keyboard layout/IME. (Assuming that you are using Pinyin 拼音 for Chinese input.)
4. Click OK to confirm.

By default, to input Chinese character, you will have to press on the left Alt + Shift key. If you don’t want the default setting, you can always do your own setting by clicking the “Key Settings” button.

Once you have finish install this, you may want to restart your computer (or during the earlier stage). Then you should be able to see the language bar at the right bottom of your desktop with the letters “EN“.

When you want to input Chinese character, just press on the left Alt + Shift key (for default settings), then the EN will change to CN. Vice versa, if you want to input English character again.

IF you can’t see this at the bottom of your desktop, you probably haven’t enable the language toolbar. To do so, right click on your taskbar, choose Toolbars > Language bar.

Lastly, you can now input Chinese characters.

Voila~

Tip: This is not only limited to Chinese input. You can use the same method to setup other supported languages, as long as you install the corresponding input language.

Failed to start the X Server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X Server output to diagnose the problem?

Then, you are given a “Yes” or “No” option, and you are stuck. What to do next? This is probably due to your graphical interface, meaning your graphic card driver. In Windows, you can easily install the motherboard driver which includes the onboard VGA driver.  Whereas in Ubuntu, you cannot do that with the motherboard driver given by the manufacturer (because most are built for Windows).

All you have to do is to reconfigure the X server. Type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and answer the questions accordingly. If you are not sure which option to choose (especially on the preinstall graphic driver), I suggest you to use the trial and error method.

Please take note that you can solve this problem by typing the command above if you are just using an onboard graphic card. I’m not sure how will it work with additional graphic cards like nVidia or ATI.

This is very irritating and normally we have to reboot our system before we can successfully remove that particular file or folder. No worries, you can now delete those unwanted files or folders in seconds!

You can’t delete a file or folder because it is “occupied”, so what you need to do is to “unlock” it before you are able to delete it. To “unlock” a file or folder, you will need a freeware called Unlocker.

It will create an eBay shortcut upon installation. However, you can choose not to install it. Uncheck eBay shortcuts.

After installation, you will now be able to “unlock” the undeletable file or folder. Now, you will be prompt an Unlocker window after you click on the “OK” button on the error message window. Or you can right click on the file that you want to “unlock” and choose “Unlocker“.

Then you will see something like this:

You can select individual process to unlock, or just unlock all. After that just delete that particular file or folder as usual. Cheers!

Sometimes, it takes even longer time than expected to end a not responding application, which is really very annoying. Now, you can make the not responding application end itself automatically (in Windows XP) by editting the Windows registry.

This requires you to be extremely careful because you need to edit the Windows registry. Before doing that, make sure you backup your Windows Registry and go to the Registry Editor.

Go to Start > Run and type regedit.

On the left panel, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Then on the right panel, create or edit the following values:

Set “AutoEndTasks” value to 1. (default value: 0)

Set “HungAppTimeout” value to 1000. (default value: 5000)

Set “WaitToKillAppTimeout” value to 0. (default value: 20000)

If the key does not exist, you will have to create a new DWORD by right clicking any where at the right panel and select:

After you have finish editting the registry, exit the Registry Editor.  Every now and then when an application is not responding, it will end automatically.

First, you will have to download doPDF which is only 1.42MB in size. After that, install doPDF. The first thing you will see choosing the languge you want during the installation process. You probably just need English, so click OK.

After that just cilck on Next.

Accept the agreement and click Next.

By default, the program will install in the Program Files under C Drive, click Next for the default setting. Or else click on Browse to choose your desire installation path.

Click Next to continue.

You may want to leave this box uncheck if you already have a default printer. Setting this as default printer will always create PDF files when you use the print function. Click Next to continue.

Choose other languages other than English if you want to.

Once you click OK, the conversion will start and it will open up the newly converted PDF file in your default PDF view, for instance Adobe PDF Reader or Foxit Reader.

That’s all. You can create as many PDF files as you like with such methods for FREE. Why do you need to buy another PDF creator if you can get a fully functionally one for FREE, right?

This post is a guide for those who want to install Canon PIXMA iP1880 driver to Ubuntu Linux. The following method is being tested and proved working in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 (earlier versions are not working).

Canon PIXMA iP1880

Step 1

Download 2 files from Canon Server. Click on Linux at the Select OS panel. The two rpm files you have to download are:

Common package – cnijfilter-common-2.70-1.i386
Package for iP1800 series – cnijfilter-ip1800series-2.70-1.i386

Because these are .rpm files, we have to convert it to .deb, the Ubuntu packaging format.

Step 2

To convert to .deb we need to use alien. Install the alien package by command:
sudo apt-get install alien

Convert those 2 .rpm files to .deb:
sudo alien -k cnijfilter-common-2.70-1.i386.rpm
sudo alien -k cnijfilter-ip1800series-2.70-1.i386.rpm

Install it:
sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-common_2.70-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-ip1800series_2.70-1_i386.deb

Other than those files, you need some old library such as libtiff3 and libpng3 to support it. If you can’t find libtiff3 on the repository, then you have to make a softlink to point libtiff3 to libtiff4. Without this installation, you won’t be able to print anything.

To make a softlink to point libtiff3 to libtiff4:
cd /usr/lib/
sudo ln -s ./libtiff.so.4.2.1 ./libtiff.so.3

For libpng3, install from repository:
sudo apt-get install libpng3

Step 3

After you have installed the above commands successfully, do the following:

Turn on the printer and connect the USB to the printer.

Go to System>Administration>Printing

Double click “New Printer“.

Select Printer Type “Local or Detected Printer”

Select a Detected Printer: Canon iP1800 series and click next.

If you can’t find iP1800 on the list, then select “Install Driver” and point to /usr/share/cups/model and select canonip1800.ppd.

Go to the next page and click on the apply button.

You will now see an iP1800 printer icon in your Printer window. You can make it your default printer by right click and select “Make Default”.

Lastly, you can try to print a test page that looks something like this:
